This is the side of the house where the out door fire pit was at. This is a work in progress and we hope to start really planting our fall crops this week.
You can see where I have been growing purple hull peas this year. From that one small box, was able to put away a lot of peas. Its still growing and has pea pods on it!! Another box already has multiplying onions growing in it and have been doing so since last year. My daughter threw some carrot seeds in one of the boxes earlier this year that was not ready with good soil. They grew but only came out about an inch or two long.
We have cabbage, collards, mustard greens and turnip greens that need to be planted this week in these boxes. I am hopeful for a really good crop before it becomes just too cold for them. I must say though that here in my part of Mississippi, it doesn't always get too cold for the greens that are grown here. Snow fall here is very rare these days and if we do get snow it is usually around January or even March.

The black and white Bantams in the pictures above are my new ones that I got yesterday while at the TSC animal swap day. They are very healthy!! There are way more roosters in the bunch than most people usually want but here they will have a purpose!! They are excellent for the maintenance of small insects that try to take over around the yard like fleas and ticks. And we have a lot of those here in North Mississippi! I also hope they keep the spider populations under control because that is one thing, other than the snakes, that I can not tolerate around the house.

This is looking straight into the fenced area of the pasture. At least to us it is a pasture. Its really our back yard and is a lot bigger than you would think! The buildings towards the back are the chicken coops and barn area that will eventually get expanded. For now we are just working on getting them winterized to keep all of our animals warm and dry this winter.
From the pictures above you can see the other half of the "pasture" that we still have left to fence in. Hopefully that is one of the many things we can get to this week. I have 4 goats that I am expecting to pick up later this week and all the extra room will be needed. Besides the more I have fenced in, the less we have to mow for our selves!!
Teaching the Children Animal First Aid
I will not post pictures of what we did because I am not sure who will see these posts. And it can be very gruesome to those who have a weak stomach!
As I was finishing up giving our little calf her last shot of antibiotics in her neck, my daughter informed me that the cat had a couple holes in her side that was oozing nasty looking stuff. I went and found all of my supplies (when on a farm you learn what to keep on hand) and got down to business. My daughter who is only 8 years old assisted me. Her brother who is also 8 years old decided he was just gonna supervise to make sure it was done correctly. At least that is what he said! LOL.
My daughter held the cat down gently but firmly because you never know how any animal will react even thought you are there to help. Even when giving the calf a shot I have to be careful that she does not kick me with her legs because although she is small, they are extremely strong. So with my sterile gloves on, I probe the area and it begins to ooze the nastiest, most smelliest stuff ever. My son then became even more interested in what was going on and decided he needed a closer look. My daughter then says,"Look how cool! Will I be required to do this when I become a veterinarian?" Which I reply, "Yes you will." She then says, "Look at what the cool stuff I will get to do bubba and you won't!". I got so tickled at them! I finished up mashing all the puss out and cleaned the area. I will keep it clean and put antibiotic ointment on the area until it heals completely. WHAT a great ending to a regular Sunday at home!
Until Next time.........
