I picked this egg up today out of the nest box. See the "ring" around it? Its the weirdest looking egg my chickens have laid so far. I thought I would share it with all of you. A few friends in the farming groups I am in says that it will not hatch if I set it. They are most likely right, they have been doing this longer than I have. But the egg is cool though!!

This is my little Bantam Hen and her 4 brand new babies. She sat on the eggs herself and I figured I would let her raise these herself. She is a very protective momma!! She attacks all the dogs when they get too close. My young goose Lucy wasn't watching where she was going and ran the hen over. The hen attacked Lucy and Lucy was screaming like a coyote had a hold of her! Was the funniest thing I ever seen!! (Bantams are super small chickens!)

We finally got started on the new pasture area. Its a slow job but it has to be done. I know when hunting season really gets started it will be hard to get any help from my oldest boy because he will be in the woods non stop! Which of course is totally fine with me as long as he brings home some meat for the freezers!! Nothing in the world is as healthy or as tasteful as venison!! My absolute FAVE!!!!!
I have eaten deer meat since I was a child. I grew up around adults who hunted and considered it a learning experience that is just as important as any thing that can be taught at school. This is something my generation and younger have lost or forgotten. Maybe their parents just were not able to teach it to them. I do not want my children to have this same behavior which is why I am carrying on the tradition of hunting, homemade cooking and gardening. It is important for all Americans to learn to care for themselves and their families and to STOP relying completely (notice I said completely, nothing wrong with having a helping hand as long as you are helping yourself as well!) on the government. Sitting around with your hand held out like you are owed something and wanting someone else to pay your way is very UN-AMERICAN in my opinion.
Remember the old saying: Chase the American Dream? Do you even know what the actual true meaning behind that is?? It actually doesn't have an exact definition. Its for each individual person to determine what THEIR American Dream is and to succeed in getting there through hard work and determination. This farm for me is my version of the American Dream. I am only hopeful that my children learn what they need along the way to live a better and more fulfilled life.

Today I also canned 19 jars of red grapes in a medium syrup. They will be great to eat this winter or to use in a recipe. With these you can also open them and use to make grape juice. Just pour the contents in a container and strain the grapes out making sure to press all juice out of the grapes. Mix the juice with one equal part of water (if you have a quart of juice mix with a quart of water). Viola! Grape Juice!!
